Golgotha of Mundare

Skip the giant sausage the next time you go to Mundare and drive up the road to visit the Golgotha of Mundare instead. Way more interesting.
This fascinating structure is designed so that the faithful can visit in order to pray and meditate privately. Although it has a main outdoor altar that is occasionally used to celebrate Mass, the Grotto is essentially a combination of chaplets, prayer stations, and catacombs designed to convey and emphasize the element of mysticism in the Ukrainian Catholic religion. The idea to build the Grotto was conceived by Reverend P. Bodnar. Construction began in 1932, with the Basilians actively taking part in the project. It took approximately a decade to complete. Constructed from a combination of fieldstone, masonry, and concrete, the Grotto is crowned by an 8.5 metre steel cross that lights up the night sky. Much of the Grotto's beauty stems from the carefully-tended vines and shrubs that drape and surround it. [Source: http://www.ualberta.ca/CIUS/religion-culture/c-alberta/tour/p6.htm]

Dark night of the soul

Reason flees, August 2011

In the real dark night of the soul it is always three o' clock in the morning, day after day.

One more day

One more day of vacation. I've enjoyed sleeping in and waking up after the sun pushes up into my rare northern sky. Today, my drowsy family slept until 11:00 a.m. and even then we only got up because it was 11:00. You could sure tell the sinners on our block; the only ones with unshoveled walks at this time on a Sunday morning. Winter is for sleeping I say. And dreaming big dreams.

Dancing into the future

I want to learn how to dance. My wife and I went to the Eldorado Hospital Christmas party a few weeks ago. We spent most of the night sitting on our bums eating and eating (prairie food is too delicious) and eating. We did a little bit of dancing, but just to the disco-pop songs. Rah-Rah-Rasputin. My wife looks beautiful whatever she's doing, but I felt like a tool dancing the same way I did when I was 12 and had worked up enough nerve to ask Connie Killkenny to dance. It's a side to side Frankenstein shuffle that is sort of in time with the music and once in a while I jazz it up with some bend at the elbows finger-snapping. Frankly, I'm not sure why she agrees to dance with me. Love is still blind I guess.

So, we danced 3 songs, watched the rest, and continued eating. I mooned over the couples who knew the moves so well that they could waltz or two-step to any song, even Take a Chance on Me. I'm in love with the romantic notion of being together with someone you love in the middle of a teaming dance floor. Public intimacy rules.

It's time to do something about this lack of knowledge/skill. If I can learn Chinese on my iPod, surely we can teach ourselves how to dance. Challenge accepted. Next year we dance!

November blue

I love the blue, endless sky of fall and winter. There are no limits to what the light can do.
